1917 American LaFrance - Auction - Weybridge, SURREY - The American LaFrance Fire Engine Company is one of the oldest fire apparatus manufacturers with roots that go back to approximately 1832. The company that went on to become American LaFrance built hand-drawn, horse-drawn and steam-powered fire engines. The International Fire Engine Company, corporate predecessor of American LaFrance, built some steam power fire engines between 1903 and 1907. Apparatus built by International included horse drawn steamers, hose wagons and hook and ladders to chemical engines, water towers and combinations. American LaFrance delivered its first motorised fire engine in 1907 and over the years, they built thousands of fire trucks including chemical engines, combination pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, Aero Chief snorkel trucks and airport crash trucks.  This American LaFrance was imported in 2013 and whilst not registered on UK plates, a NOVA certificate is available confirming all taxes and duties have been paid thus enabling any purchaser to register the vehicle if required. In need of restoration, we are advised by the vendor that everything seems present and correct although it appears to be some decades since this interesting short chassis, 9 litre LaFrance has been driven on the road. Our inspection confirmed this to be quite a sound example, bearing in mind she is nearly 100 years old. A great winter project that will result in an historic vehicle eligible for virtually any rally in the world; for example the Peking to Paris rally which has featured an American LaFrance in all but one race; these handsome, robust vehicles are perfect for long distance endurance events.

This rare and desirable 1917 American La France Type 40 Fire truck, #2400, became part of the Alpha Fire Company in Littletown, Pennsylvania in 1919. It was their second, motorized fire truck and it served the growing community until the late 1920s when it was replaced and placed into storage. (http://www.alpha20fire.org/History.html)

The fire truck remained on the east coast until the early 1970s when it was purchased by Margaret and Fred Brusher of Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Brushers were leading collectors of fine Americana and Folk Art. The fire truck was in well-preserved and complete condition when purchased by the Brushers.  It was professionally restored for their private collection where it remained until approximately 2000. After Fred’s death, #2400 was sold to Howard Weaver and became part of the Michigan Firehouse Museum in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Today, #2400 remains in excellent overall condition. The correct dark red paint with its gold leaf accents remains extremely bright and vibrant throughout. The truck is equipped with all of its proper and correct accessories including the original pump, the hand-hammered, nickel plated chemical tank, the original wire mesh hose basket, a full complement of original ladders, hoses, fittings, extinguishers, and lantern. The truck still retains its original American La France-script radiator badge, hubcaps, gauges, and data plates as well as the proper 60 mph Jones speedometer, moto-meter, headlamps, spot light and the accessory spring loaded bumper.

What makes this particular example highly sought after by today’s collectors is it’s small size. The majority of the American La France fire trucks in existence today are built on the long wheel base chassis and powered by the six cylinder engines. This Model 40 is built on the short wheelbase chassis. The entire truck measures just 20 feet long, which means it can be stored in a regular garage and transported on a normal size car trailer. This Model 40 is powered by its original, four-cylinder, T-head engine, which is coupled to a four-speed transaxle that powers the rear wheels via dual, chain drive. This example retains its scarce and original, large diameter, 21” wood artillery wheels, which are covered in 36 x 5” hard rubber tires that could easily be converted to pneumatic tires if desired. The truck runs and drives well but does have some minor flaws and imperfections as seen in the photos.

This is a rare opportunity to purchase a desirable and well-documented, small size fire truck that is ready to use and enjoy. For more information, please call David Weber (314) 941-3244 or email Dave@stlouiscarmuseum.com

1970 Jaguar E-Type - $39,750 - Santa Ana, CA -

1970 JAGUAR E-TYPE XKE SERIES TWO ROADSTER. 43,493 ORIGINAL MILES. ORIGINAL TIRES. ORIGINAL CARMEN RED WITH BEIGE TRIM. 4-SPEED. CHROME WIRE WHEELS. POWER STEERING. AIR CONDITIONING. RUNS WELL. NEEDS EASY COSMETICS/RECOMMISSIONING. EXCELLENT, SOLID, RUNNING CAR. MATCHING NUMBERS.

Offered for sale, from KURT TANNER MOTORCARS, is this very good Series Two Roadster for straightforward improvement. This car has very low original miles and has had only one repaint in it's current Primrose Yellow over it's original Carmen Red. The trim is mostly original. It has spent most of it's life indoors in a Midwest car collection. The body is excellent, being totally accident-free and rustfree, save for a few rust minor lines in the dipped floor sections. It was manufactured in November of 1969 and sold as a 1970 year model.
As seen by the photos, the body gaps on this car are very good. The bonnet has been mounted on the car for shipping purposes. All the panels open and close well. There are a few dings and dents. The trunk pops open with no broken holding springs. The car presents well but has older paint. The trunk area/boot floor are perfect. It comes with lots of asssociated parts for the car that are pictured. The previous owner applied a dark brown chip guard to the rocker panels, but they are absolutely solid, original, and rustfree.
The radiator, steering rack, and A/C compressor have been removed for servicing, but are present. The car's engine runs on a fresh battery and gravity-fed fuel. There are no noises, no smoke, and a healthy tickover with 30-40lbs oil pressure. The exhaust system was replaced at one time and is very nice and quiet, in great condition. A brake and fuel system service is required to make it a driver. The car has it's matching number engine that appears to have never been removed from the car. There is evidence of the original red paint on the front subframes. The engine bay is very clean and would detail up nicely.
The car's existing interior is the original. A replacement black top was fitted at some point which is in decent condition. Most of the original dashboard would respond well to a detail, with a nice steering, switches, and gauges .
The car's underside is very solid and looks normal for the car's mileage.
Overall, this solid, clean, low mileage Jaguar is the perfect car for simple, straightforward improvement. It left the factory in a desirable color scheme loaded with most options. It has spent an easy life garaged  with very little use and is a fantastic opportunity to secure an open 6-cylinder E-type needing some minor mechanicals and a light refreshing of it's  cosmetics.
